Skin Cancer Awareness: Be Sun Smart
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Of all the cancers humans can get, skin cancer is the most common. More than 1 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States every year. Who gets skin cancer? People of all colors and races get skin cancer. Risk factors include: sunburns, family history of skin cancer, exposure to x-rays, weakened immune system. Using indoor tanning devices such as tanning beds and sunlamps also increases the risk of developing skin cancer.
You can have fun in the sun and decrease your risk of skin cancer! Here is how to be Sun Smart:
* Generously apply sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or more to all exposed skin. Reapply every two hours, even on cloudy days and after swimming or sweating.
* Wear protective clothing such as a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, pants and long-sleeved shirts when possible.
* Seek shade. Remember the sun's rays are strongest between 10am and 4pm. If your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade.
* Protect children from sun exposure by playing in the shade, wearing protective clothing and applying sunscreen.
* Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can cause skin cancer and wrinkling.
* Check your birthday suit on your birthday! If you notice anything changing, growing, or bleeding on your skin, see a dermatologist.
Skin cancer is very treatable when caught early. Be Sun Smart this summer. For more information, or tips on staying Sun Smart, contact a Health Educator at the Christian County Health Department at 887-4160.
