Sherrill, Hayes to coach Kentucky All Stars against Indiana

Two basketball coaches with ties to Hopkinsville High School and University Heights Academy will be at the helm of the Kentucky All-Stars basketball team when they take on the Indiana All-Stars in June.

Bowling Green High School basketball coach D.G. Sherrill will be the head coach of the Kentucky All Stars. Former University Heights Academy coach Terry Hayes, who coached with Sherrill at Dawson Springs and Hopkinsville high schools, will be on the Kentucky staff.

“I got to pick a few guys on my staff and Terry is like my brother,” Sherrill told WHOP on Monday. “We started out at Dawson Springs together and coached there for three years. Then we were at Hopkinsville for four years together. This is just another opportunity for us to work again together. I think it’s going to be fun for both of us.”

Sherrill, a Caldwell County High School graduate, coached the Kentucky Junior All-Stars last year, which means he will be the Senior All Stars coach this year. He also has picked former Christian County High School assistant coach Cedric Browning, Shane Buttry and Lexington Catholic Head Coach Brandon Salsman for his staff. Browning and Buttry are part of the Sherrill’s staff at Bowling Green.

Hayes said he was excited for the opportunity to coach again with Sherrill.

“It’s always an honor to coach the Kentucky All Stars and it’s even more of an honor to coach the Kentucky All Stars with Coach Sherrill,” Hayes said. “I have the utmost respect for him as a coach and the amazing things he has achieved along his journey. He’s not only a good coach but a great person as well.”

Hayes called the experience a “bucket list” moment for him.

“I’m looking forward to meeting and working with the players and other coaches who were chosen for this lifetime opportunity,” Hayes said.”I really like the makeup of this year’s All Star team. It’s going to be a lot of fun and I’m grateful for this opportunity.”

The Kentucky Seniors will scrimmage the Kentucky Juniors May 31 at Louisville Eastern High School. The Seniors will take on the Indiana All-Stars June 6 and June 7 at Lexington Catholic High School and at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
