A five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh came up just short for the University Heights Academy Lady Blazers who dropped a 10-9 high school softball game to visiting McLean County on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Cougars broke open a close game with four runs in the top of the sixth inning and took a 9-4 advantage. They tacked on another run in the top of the seventh.
However, UHA rallied to draw within 10-9 with two out in the seventh. With bases loaded, Kathrine Wood’s sharp grounder to third base was fielded to end the threat and the game.
Emily Dilday had a big game for the Lady Warriors going 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Brooke Hancock had a pair of hits and two RBI and Gracie Ausenbaugh also drove in a pair of runs for the Lady Blazers, who slipped to 3-6 on the season.
UHA also ran wild, stealing seven bases on the day. Dilday, Hancock, and Ausenbaugh each had two steals.
The Lady Blazers’ next scheduled game is May 6 at home against Dawson Springs.
