The Hopkinsville High School girls’ track team got a team effort and finished just short of a runner-up finish in the prestigious Area 1 Championship Saturday at Henderson County High School.
Leading the way for the Lady Tigers individually was junior Grace Cansler, who finished second in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.02. She also was fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.57 seconds.
Alexis Herrera-Lovato also picked up a silver medal in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:31.55.
Kaniya Jackson Grundy had an impressive run, taking fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.41 seconds.
The Lady Tigers’ 400-meter relay team earned a gold medal with a time of 4:24.85. The team consisted of Cansler, Alicia Davis, Jackson Grundy, and Herrera-Lovato. The 100-meter relay team of Jackson Grundy, Davis, A’Ireona Spikes, and Sharber took silver in 53.42 seconds. Meanwhile, the 200-meter relay team of Cansler, Davis, Jackson Grundy, and Spikes was fourth in 1:55.09.
Kaydon Coates also scored two points for Hopkinsville as she took seventh in the 1,600-meter run in 6:46.63.
The Lady Tigers finished third as a team with 56 points. Calloway County dominated the girls’ meet with 202 points, followed by Ballard Memorial with 57.5 points.
In the boys’ meet, Tyson Cavinder earned a gold medal in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:41.14.
Keyshun Teal ran third in the 110-meter hurdles and Elijah Reid was sixth in 15.60 and 17.73 seconds, respectively. Reid also finished seventh in the 300-meter hurdles, just ahead of teammate Kayden Humphrey.
Savior Davis earned a point by taking eighth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:09.56.
Treston Kay finished seventh in the 100-meter dash in 11.61 seconds and Carlo Jones was eighth in the 400-meter dash in 55.58 seconds.
All the Tigers’ relay teams scored points on the day led by the 800-meter relay team of Cavinder, Jones, Jeffers, and Davis, which finished third place. The 100-meter relay team of Kay, Reid, Hawkins, and Teal finished fifth in 45.95 seconds. The 200-meter relay team consisting of Kay, Teal, Jalen Ray, and Burgess was fifth in 1:36.04. Meanwhile, the 400-meter relay team picked up two points and finished seventh in 3:46.61.
Fort Campbell won the boys’ meet with 99 points, followed by Henderson County (77), and Caldwell County (72). Hopkinsville was seventh with 54 points.
