Colonels, Tigers seeking answers at QB at Best of the West

Both Hopkinsville and Christian County have some key questions to answer as they open their final high school football seasons today with the Best of the West 7-on-7 Passing Tournament at the Stadium of Champions.

The Tigers have three players vying for the quarterback position. Hoptown coach Dustin Lopez said he hopes to see one of the players grab control of the No.1 spot.

Meanwhile, Christian County has lost most of its main 2024 playmakers to graduation or transfer.

Senior Tom Johnson returned to the team after not playing last year and will lead the Colonels’ offense.

Colonels’ coach Ethan Atchley said he hopes to get Johnson some reps, but he also wants to see how his young team will respond against good competition this weekend.

Twenty teams are entered in the event, which includes teams from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana. There are five pools with four teams each that will play a round-robin format on July 11. The tournament portion of the event will be on July 12.

Hopkinsville’s pool includes Franklin County, Clarksville Northeast, and Fort Campbell.

Christian County will play in a pool with defending Best of the West champion Macon County (Tenn.), Pearl Cohn out of Nashville, and Madisonville-North Hopkins.

Pool-play games will begin at 9 a.m. today and wrap up around 1 p.m. Games will resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
