Colonels face high-powered Mayfield tonight

The Christian County Colonels will have their hands full tonight as they play host to the Mayfield Cardinals.

Mayfield enters the game coming off a 40-7 win over Graves County last Friday night and are ranked No. 2 in the Class 2-A by most polls.

The Cardinals return most of their offensive playmakers from last year including junior quarterback Gray Robbins and junior running back Josiah England. Robbins threw for 1,972 yards and 21 touchdowns and England ran for 1,568 yards last season. They also return senior wide receiver Malik, who is ranked among the top-10 players in Class 2-A.

Defensively, Mayfield returns the nucleus of a squad that ranked seventh in Class 2-A a year ago in scoring defense and eighth in rushing defense.

Christian County, which dropped a 48-20 decision to Clarksville Northeast last Saturday night, had seven turnovers in the opener. Colonels’ coach Ethan Atchley said his team will have to clean up those mistakes and then get a good game from special teams and defense to have a chance against the Cardinals.

Mayfield leads the all-time series 8-4 and has outscored the Colonels 116-8 the last two seasons. Christian County has not beaten the Cardinals in football since 1988.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the Colonels’ Countdown to Kickoff Show set for 6:30 p.m. on 95.3 The Farm and 953thefarm.com.

Tickets are available at Gofan. Spectators are reminded that everyone must go through the weapon detection system at the main gate and there are no backpacks, bags, or purses allowed in the stadium.
