With only about two weeks left before the opening night for the Hoptown Hoppers baseball team, the organization is still looking for host families for the players.
The Hoppers play in the Ohio Valley League, a wooden bat college basebal league. Players from around the country come to Hopkinsville for the summer to play in the league and the team needs host families to provide the players with a place to stay while they are here.
Lea Martin, who has been working to try and find host families for the last few months, said on Tuesday’s Early Bird Show that about a handful of host families are needed.
Martin and her family have been a host family for many years, but for Hoppers Board Member, Jamie Folz and her family, 20 players and two coaches have called their house “home” for the summer since 2013.
Folz said there is little risk and all reward for hosting a Hopper.
Folz said some people may take vacations or be gone for a time during the season, which may deter them from being a host family. She said they can make “scrambling concessions” and that shouldn’t be a reason not to host a player.
Players usually arrive around Memorial Day and the season ends the final week of July.
Host families receive free season tickets for the Hoppers home games, which all will be played at Hopkinsville High School’s Tiger Field this summer.
Meet the Hoppers is scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. May 27 at Camo Caravan and the opening night game is May 29 at home against Madisonville.
Anyone interested in being a host family can call or text Lea Martin at 270-498-9019 or contact her through the team’s Facebook page.
