Colonels rock the rim, power past Calloway County

The Christian County Colonels opened play in the Hardwood Classic Monday night with a 69-54 boys’ basketball win over host Calloway County.

Junior center Rahsean Stevenson had 16 of his 23 points in the first half as the Colonels clung to a 36-34 lead at the break. A late spurt to end the third quarter, capped by Stafford Winston’s 3-pointer at the buzzer, gave the Colonels a 53-43 advantage.

The Colonels (4-3) pushed the lead to 15 early in the final quarter and the Lakers (4-5) couldn’t get closer than 12 the remainder of the game.

Jay Henderson added 14 points and James Farley had 11 points, but rocked the rim with three dunks, for the Colonels.

The Lakers played without three of their starters including leading scorers Luke Armstrong and Jackson Ames. Peyton Weatherford led the way for the Lakers with 24 points, including four 3-pointers all in the first half.

The Colonels’ defense wore down the young Lakers’ guards forcing 20 turnovers in the game. Christian County committed only seven.
