A five-run third inning and some timely defense helped the Christian County Colonels defeat Johns Creek, Ga., 9-5 Monday in a high school baseball game in Panama City Beach, Fla.
The Colonels (6-6) led 6-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning. But the Gladiators rallied with a five-run inning of their own to cut the lead to 6-5.
Christian County added a solo run in the top of the fifth and led 7-5 entering the seventh.
Johns Creek had a rally going in the bottom of the sixth, but the Colonels’ defense stepped up with a double play that ended the inning.
In their final at-bat, the Colonels scored two runs taking advantage of four walks and a hit batter.
Gage Montes and Leyton Lindsey each had two hits for the Colonels (6-6). Andrew Mayes drove in three runs for Christian County.
Andrew Fincham started on the mound for Christian County. He went 3 1/3 innings before Deuce Embrey took over and finished the game. Fincham earned the win and Embrey picked up the save.
The Colonels are scheduled to play Breckinridge County at 10 a.m. today.
