The Christian County Colonels’ football team will open the 2024 Class 6-A high school football playoffs tonight when they travel to Elizabethtown to take on Central Hardin in a first-round game.
The Colonels are 1-9 and the Bruins are 2-8 entering tonight’s contest. But Central Hardin will give Christian County a look it hasn’t seen this season – the Wing T offense.
Colonels’ coach Ethan Atchley said his team will have to be disciplined in order to stop the Bruins’ complicated offense.
Gage Gergely leads the Bruins in rushing with 574 yards and six touchdowns. Seth Laudermitt has run for 446 yards and two scores. Quarterback Caeden Taylor has run for 247 yards, but only has thrown for 123 yards this season.
Central Hardin averages 11.8 points per game compared to Christian County’s 14.9 points per game. However, the Bruins’ defense gives up 35 points per game.
Atchley said his team will need to be balanced to have success tonight.
Turnovers also have been a problem for the Colonels. They have thrown 10 interceptions in the last two weeks. Atchley said he will be playing quarterback by committee again tonight and ball security is a top priority.
The Colonels’ last playoff win came in 2017 when they beat Barren County 54-6 in the first round of the Class 5-A tournament. That’s a span of seven games. Central Hardin defeated the Colonels 60-0 last year in the first round of the playoffs.
Kick off tonight is set for 6:30 p.m. Central time. The F & M Bank pre-game show will air at 6 p.m. on 95.3 The Farm.
