Davis pitches Colonels past UHA for District 8 win

Revenge was on the minds of the University Heights Academy Blazers Friday night against the visiting Christian County Colonels.

But the Colonels’ Eddie Davis had other thoughts.

The sophomore right-hander struck out 10 and allowed only three hits and powered the Colonels to an 8-0 District 8 baseball game Friday night. The win improved Christian County to 13-10 overall and 6-1 in district play. The Colonels are now in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the district tournament.

Meanwhile, UHA saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in District 8. The Blazers are tied in the standings with Hopkinsville, but own the tiebreaker with the Tigers after sweeping their season series.

Just like in the first meeting two weeks ago when the Colonels beat the Blazers 8-3, Christian County got off a to a quick start.

The Colonels scored two runs in the top of the first with a pair of singles, a walk, and two hit batters. Christian County made it 3-0 in the top of the second as Johnny Lewis reached on a bunt single and eventually scored on an error.

That was more than enough for Davis, who gave up a leadoff single to Ryan Luckey and then retired the next nine Blazers he faced.

UHA had a threat going in the fourth inning as Cadence Gibson led off with a single. However, right fielder Thad Tolliver caught Hayden Hunt’s sinking line drive and threw back to first base to double up Gibson and end the threat.

The Colonels blew open the game in the top of the sixth inning with four runs on five hits. Gage Montes had a bases-clearing double and Aiden Lewis also had a RBI-single in the frame as Christian County took a 7-0 advantage.

In the top of the seventh, Layton Creamer blasted a solo home run over the left field fence to make it 8-0.

The Blazers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on two walks and a hit batter, but Davis got Josh Pace to line out to second base to end the game.

Johnny Lewis led the Colonels with three hits. Tolliver went 2-for-4 with a double, and Creamer also had a pair of hits.

Eli Finch had a double for UHA.

Jaiden Miles suffered the pitching loss for the Blazers. The junior right-hander went three innings and gave up three runs while striking out seven.

Weather permitting, Christian County is scheduled to play at Warren East on Saturday. UHA is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Muhlenberg County on Saturday. The Blazers are set to play the host Mustangs and No. 25-ranked Barren County.
