Hayes steps down as UHA basketball coach

University Heights Academy is looking for a new basketball coach today after learning Monday morning that Terry Hayes was resigning a position he held at the school for two years.

“I greatly appreciate the opportunity that University Heights Academy has given me to coach basketball, but I have decided to resign my current position as basketball coach at UHA,” Hayes said in a text message to WHOP. “I plan to explore other options in my profession.”

Hayes coached the Blazers for two seasons, amassing a 33-20 record. He coached UHA to the 2024 District 8 championship and a 24-7 record. This season, injuries and internal team issues hampered the team, which finished 9-13 and lost to Christian County in the district tournament semifinals.

UHA Athletics Director Taylor Sparks was complimentary of Hayes and his time with the school.

“I want to thank Coach Hayes for all he has done here at UHA and I wish him well in any future endeavors,” Sparks said.

Hayes said he already had been contacted about two open basketball coaching positions and was leaving the door open to possibly coaching again somewhere.

“I’m just going where God leads me,” Hayes said.

Sparks said Hayes would be staying at UHA and helping with the region scheduling meeting that’s set for Wednesday and that his teaching position at the private school would be intact through the end of the school year.

Hayes was hired by UHA in April of 2023 and replaced Melvin Brown. He coached 16 years at Dawson Springs and Hopkinsville, reaching the Sweet 16 semifinals in 2003 with a Tigers team that finished 33-3.
