Henderson, Madisonville advance to Region 2 finals

There will be a new Boys’ Region 2 Basketball Tournament champion after Henderson County held off three-time defending region champion Lyon County 59-55 Tuesday night in the second semifinal at Maroon Gym in Madisonville.

Cooper Davenport led the Colonels, who are looking for their first region title since 1999, with 19 points and Amare Stewart added 13.

The two teams were tied 27-27 at halftime but Lyon surged ahead 46-42 entering the final quarter. However, the Colonels rallied to tie the game at 53-53.

Lyon, which saw its season end at 25-8, mustered only two points in the extra period and Henderson advanced to the March 18 final. The Lyons had three players in double figures led by Isaac Defew’s 14 points. Bray Kirk had 13 points and Nolan Coffmen added 11.

Henderson improved to 24-6 and will take on Madisonville-North Hopkins, which edged Union County 73-69 in the opening semifinal game.

Landen Smith scored 34 points and powered the Maroons to their first regional final appearance since 2021.

Smith hit four of his five 3-pointers in the first half as the Maroons (17-12) led by as much as 11 points. However, the Braves rallied from a 40-31 halftime deficit to take a 50-49 lead into the final quarter.

Peyton Smith, who had 16 points, and Landon Smith hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the win for the Maroons.

Kanyon Johnson added 11 points for Madisonville, which is seeking its first region title since 2020.

Union County, which ended the year at 16-11, was led by Daishawn Curry’s 28 points. Jaidyn Wilson added 10.

The region title game will be played at 7 p.m. on March 18. Airtime for the game will be 6:50 p.m. on 95.3 The Farm.
