KHSAA approves major change for football classification

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control met on Thursday and approved a major change that could reshape football classifications beginning in the 2027-28 realignment cycle.

The Louisville Courier-Journal reported last night, that under the measure, private schools will have their boys enrollment multiplied by 1.35, only for football classification. Public schools will continue to use the 1.0 factor.

The adjustment means some private schools could have to move up a class in football when the next four-year alignment takes effect in 2027.  It was expected that the new alignment was going to be released on Thursday, but more time is needed to review the plan. The KHSAA plans to adopt the new classification lineup in May.

A similar plan was adopted on Thursday for track and cross country, with schools’ total enrollment multiplied by 1.35.

It is unlikely that the adjustment will affect the new Christian County High School, which is expected to play in Class 6-A in football and 3-A in track and cross country.
