The Christian County Lady Colonels captured the Girls’ District 8 Basketball Tournament title on Thursday night with a 70-26 victory over host Hopkinsville.
Anaysia Bagwell had 17 points and Genesis McGee added 13 to lead the Lady Colonels to their second straight district crown.
Lady Colonels’ coach Kiki Radford said the title means a lot to the team in its final season before consolidating next year with Hoptown.
The Lady Colonels grabbed control of the game in the second quarter as its pressure defense put a choke hold on the Lady Tigers’ guards. Christian County outscored Hopkinsville 30-7 in the quarter and put the game away.
The defense continued in the third quarter as Hoptown turnovers resulted in Christian County outscoring the Lady Tigers taking a 63-19 advantage.
Bagwell scored the first seven points of the third quarter. After the running clock was implemented, the Lady Colonels began making substitutions.
Radford said she was happy with her team’s performance as it now prepares for the regional tournament.
Meanwhile, Hopkinsville coach Keith Leslie said his team will have to be tougher next week as it will also play in the region tournament.
Serenity Ewing led Hoptown with 17 points.
The Lady Colonels have won six straight games and are 14-9 entering next week’s Region 2 Tournament at Hopkins County Central. Hopkinsville fell to 2-18 on the season, but also will play in the region tournament. The draw for the tournament will be held on Saturday morning.
Thursday night’s game likely was the last meeting between the two schools in girls’ basketball.
