Lyon County ended the Region 2 Baseball Tournament championship hopes for the University Heights Academy Blazers Wednesday night with a 5-1 victory on their home field at Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville.
UHA was looking for its first Region 2 Baseball Tournament championship in four tries and Lyon won its second title in school history.
Austin Spears hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning to give Lyon a 1-0 lead and Peyton Williams slammed a three-run homer in the fifth to make the score 4-0.
Meanwhile, Williams was too tough on the mound. The Western Kentucky University signee scattered five hits and struck out 11 batters.
UHA Coach Scott Gentry said he expected Williams to be a difficult challenge.
The Lyons made it 5-0 in the top of the seventh inning as Brady Belt singled and later scored on a single by the Region 2 Player of the Year, Korben Lucas.
Jaiden Miles spoiled the shutout for Williams as he launched an opposite field solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the lead to 5-1.
Miles suffered the loss on the mound for UHA. The junior right-hander went five innings and struck out three while giving up six hits.
UHA saw its season end at 20-11 and said goodbye to its lone senior, Eli Finch. Gentry said he was proud of Finch and the team this season.
Lyon County improves to 21-7 and will play Region 1 champion McCracken County in the KHSAA State Baseball Tournament on June 6.
