Sixth-ranked Calloway County got off to a 19-6 lead and defeated Christian County 59-47 on Saturday in a boys’ high school basketball game at Trigg County High School.
The Colonels played without leading scorer and rebounder Rahsean Stevenson, who was in concussion protocol after suffering a head injury on Friday night against Hopkinsville, according to coach Dior Curtis.
The Lakers (19-3) used a 2-3 zone defense that confused the Colonels early. An 11-2 run to end the first quarter helped Calloway take a 19-6 lead.
From that point, Christian County pretty much matched baskets with the Lakers until the fourth quarter when the Colonels outscored Calloway 17-11.
Zion Acree had 16 points and Kam Williams added 10 for the Colonels, who slipped to 4-16 on the season.
Calloway guard Eli Finley hit two free throws in the first quarter to become the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,998 points. The record had stood for 57 years.
It was the first time since 2006 that Calloway beat the Colonels in basketball.
Christian County is scheduled to play at Fort Campbell tonight in a District 8 game.
