Scheidt’s grand slam helps Hoppers down Miners

The Hoptown Hoppers used a grand slam home run by Konnor Scheidt to defeat the host Madisonville Miners 9-5 Wednesday night in Ohio Valley League play.

Scheidt hit his third home run of the summer in the top of the eighth inning as part of a five-run frame.

The Miners used an error in the bottom of the first to score three runs before the Hoppers bounced back with a pair of runs in the top of the second to cut the lead to 3-2.

Madisonville pushed its lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third and the score remained until the eighth.

Hoptown added two more runs in the top of the ninth for the final tally.

Dom Bello went 3-for-4 and Chance Sweeney also had a pair of hits to lead the Hoppers’ seven-hit attack.

Zach Hampton picked up the pitching win for Hoptown. The Corpus Christi, Texas, native went six innings of relief and struck out seven while allowing only four hits and no runs.

The Hoppers (10-16) return to action Friday night at home against the OVL leading Full Count Rhythm. The game will begin at 5 p.m. with airtime set for 4:45 p.m. on 95.3 The Farm and 953thefarm.com.

The start time has been changed in an effort to complete the game before the fireworks display that is scheduled to begin at 9:15 p.m. at Ruff Park.
