Tigers crush Fort Campbell, move into district finals

The Hopkinsville Tigers placed five players in double figures and crushed Fort Campbell 86-44 in the Boys’ District 8 Basketball Tournament semifinals Tuesday night in Tiger Gym.

Jayon Bass led Hoptown with 20 points. James Bradley Jr. had 14 and Tashawn Quarles added 12 as Hopkinsville improved to 16-13 on the season.

The Tigers jumped out to a 22-10 first-quarter lead and never looked back in beating the Falcons for the 42nd straight time. The last Falcons’ win in the series came in 2006 when former Mr. Football and UK football star Micah Johnson led Fort Campbell to a three-game sweep of Hoptown.

Jonovan Leavell and Curtis Dillard each had 11 points for Hopkinsville.

Fort Campbell (9-18) was led by Tyreek Anthony’s 16 points. His 3-pointer with 3:36 to go in the first half gave him 1,201 career points and he surpassed Robbie Townsend as the Falcons’ all-time leading scorer.

Hopkinsville advances to the District 8 championship at 6 p.m. Friday to take on Christian County, which rolled past University Heights Academy 75-48 in the second semifinal on Tuesday night. Airtime for the game will be at 5:45 p.m. with the Hopkinsville broadcast on 99.3 FM and 1230 AM WHOP, while the Christian County broadcast will be on 95.3 The Farm and 953thefarm.com.
