Tigers nip UHA, grab top seed for District 8 tourney

The Hopkinsville Tigers secured the No. 1 seed for next month’s District 8 Basketball Tournament with a hard-fought 72-67 boys’ high school basketball victory over University Heights Academy Thursday night in Tiger Gym.

Jonovan Leavell had 31 points, including seven 3-pointers, as the Tigers won their fifth straight game to improve to 12-7 on the season and 3-0 in the district. James Bradley Jr. added 15 points and Jayon Bass and Tayshaun Quarles each scored 10 for Hoptown.

UHA dropped to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in the district. The Blazers were led by freshman Kadyn Simmons, who had 20 points. Keshawn Moore added 14 and Nash McAfee and Hayden Hunt provided 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Before the game, Hopkinsville introduced its fifth athletic Hall of Fame class.

UHA is scheduled to play Saturday at McCracken County.

Hoptown is back in action tonight at Evansville Reitz.
