With only three days before the final Hoptown-County football game, Christian County Public Schools Superintendent Chris Bentzel says he hopes the community will come out and be part of the historical night.
Bentzel appeared on The Early Bird Show Monday and said it seems “surreal” to call this the last game in the rivalry, which dates back to 1962 and is considered one of the best in the state.
This will be the 59th meeting in the series, which began with an 82-7 victory by the Tigers over the Colonels in 1962 at Tiger Stadium, later to be called Walnut Street Stadium. On the field, the series is tied at 29-29; however, because Hopkinsville had to forfeit a game for using an ineligible player in the 1997 season, Christian County officially leads the series 30-28.
Bentzel said Friday night will be a celebration of all former teams, players, cheerleaders, and fans. He said past traditions will be remembered.
Before the game, alumni and friends of both programs will be able to find their “decade tents” and visit with friends and former teammates. Bentzel encourages former players and cheerleaders to arrive early and take part in the celebration.
Gates will open at 5 p.m. Friday night with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. Christian County will be the home team this year.
Hopkinsville enters the game with a 4-4 overall record and the Tigers are 1-1 in Class 6-A, District 1. Christian County is 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the district.
Airtime for the game will be at 6:45 p.m. with the Hopkinsville version on Newsradio 99.3 FM and 1230 AM WHOP and the Christian County version will air on 95.3 The Farm and online at 953thefarm.com.
