University Heights Academy survived a physical contest and advanced to the Girls’ Region 2 Soccer Tournament championship with a 2-0 victory over Madisonville-North Hopkins Monday night at Givens Field.
Kendall Hancock had a pair of goals and Madison Williams returned from an injury to make seven saves and preserve the shutout.
Skylar Cantrell and Alyssa Grise provided assists for UHA.
Hancock gave UHA a 1-0 lead with 16:54 to play in the first half on an assist from Grise.
Madisonville had several opportunities to tie the game in the second half, but Hancock’s goal on an assist from Cantrell made it 2-0 with 9:08 to play and sealed the win.
The Lady Blazers improved to 18-2-1 on the season and will take on Hopkins County Central in Wednesday night’s 6 p.m. title game. The Lady Storm slipped past Trigg County 1-0 in Monday’s second semifinal game.
UHA will be looking for its first region championship since 2008 while the Lady Storm will be seeking their first region title in school history.
