Warriors look to improve behind Leek

The 2024-25 Heritage Christian Academy boys’ basketball team begins with senior guard Jason Leek. The Warriors are just hoping that their season doesn’t end with Leek.

The big question for Head Coach Matt McGowan is who will step up to provide Leek, who was one of the state’s leading scorers a year ago at 25.1 points per game, with some help.

The leading candidates to provide Leek some support include junior guard Nathan Wheatcraft, who McGowan said has worked out all summer with Leek. He also said he is expecting a good season out of junior Tycen Wells, sophomore Bryce Askew, senior Sam Thompson, and freshman point guard Cadyn Travis.

The Warriors finished 16-15 a year ago, but lost four seniors to graduation and talented sophomores Layton Giltner and Cash Bolinger transferred to Hopkinsville.

McGowan said his team has a lot of potential to grow, but his young team will need to improve as the season goes along.

Others on the roster who should see playing time include sophomore Noah Arvin, junior Caden Gresham, senior Cooper Kirkman, and sophomores Ethan Miles and Jacob Morgan.

Heritage opens the season Dec. 3 at Webster County before playing in the Kentucky Christian Athletic Conference State Tournament Dec. 6-7.

Also on the schedule are games in the Toyota Classic Dec. 14 against Foundation and a Dec. 27 game against Caldwell County in the West Kentucky Hoops Classic.

Home games on the schedule include University Heights Academy (Jan. 7), Christian County (Jan. 9) and Hopkinsville (Feb. 3).
