Wharton’s 3-point play with 3.2 seconds left lifts CCHS past Owensboro

Zyon Wharton’s three-point play with 3.2 seconds remaining lifted the host Christian County Colonels to a 54-51 boys’ high school basketball win over Owensboro Senior on Monday night.

The Colonels, who won their fifth straight game, trailed since the midway point of the first quarter but rallied to tie the game late after the Red Devils missed an open 3-pointer.

The two teams traded leads during the early portion of the game only to see the Red Devils take a 17-15 lead after one quarter. They led by as much as eight in the first half before Christian County rallied to cut the deficit to 32-28.

Rahsean Stevenson scored the first nine Colonels’ points in the third quarter to keep the hosts close, although he picked up his fourth foul late in the period and went to the bench.

Prior to his game-winning shot, Wharton had a key basket late in the game the Colonels’ defense stiffened to set up the final play.

Stevenson led Christian County (11-11) with 18 points. Jayovontae Henderson had 12 points and Wharton finished with 11.

Owensboro slipped to 3-19 on the season and were led by Kade Arnold’s 14 points.

Christian County also won the JV game 48-45 on a last-second 3-pointer by TJ Blanton in overtime.

The Colonels are back in action tonight against Todd County Central as part of a girls’/boys’ doubleheader. It is the final home game in the school’s basketball history for both the Colonels and Lady Colonels. It also is Senior Night for Christian County.
