15-year-olds can now get a driver’s permit after governor signs HB 15 into law

Fifteen-year-olds across the Commonwealth now have the chance to get their permits, and work is already underway to get that up and running with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Governor Andy Beshear has signed House Bill 15 into law, which takes effect immediately and allows 15-year-olds to earn the driver’s permits, as opposed to the 16-year-old requirement it was before.  So now, the Transportation Cabinet is working to implement the measure as quickly as possible.

Systems upgrades are underway—as early as April 2, applicants can start making appointments with Kentucky State Police. If you’ve already made an appointment, you can reschedule to help prevent delays.

The new law only allows more time for drivers to hold a permit, you still need to be 16 to obtain an intermediate license.
