Cold snap could bring frigid temperatures to start December

It’s looking likely that this region will have a pretty cold start to December, bringing in the Christmas season with a cold snap.

The National Weather Service in Paducah is forecasting that the weekend leading into the first week of December will plunge into the coldest temperatures by far for this season. For the days of November 29 through December 5, temperatures could be 10 to 15 degrees below normal, resulting in high temperatures in the 30’s and low’s digging down into the 10’s.

That’s not accounting for wind chill—with the wind, the possibility of wind chill values in the single digits or lower during the nighttime hours is possible.

The National Weather Service is urging people to prepare for this cold snap now by winterizing homes, protecting vulnerable pipes that are prone to freezing, and organizations who assist with the unhoused and other vulnerable populations should prepare for multiple days of potentially dangerous cold.
