School Board approves 2025 graduation ceremony date

As the end of the school year approaches, the Christian County School Board approved a graduation date for high school seniors at Thursday’s meeting.

Director of Pupil Personnel Melanie Barret requested that the 2025 graduation ceremonies be on May 23 at the Stadium of Champions. Christian County High School seniors will graduate at 5 p.m. and Hopkinsville High School seniors will graduate at 8:30 p.m.

Board members also approved continuing a memorandum of understanding between both high schools regarding the use of a 30-acre plot of land for agricultural uses. Corn, wheat and soybeans will be grown on the land which also be used for lab instruction and agricultural demonstrations.

Local agribusinesses will provide equipment and crop seeds as well as oversee the land. Assistant Superintendent Kevin Crider says the land will be useful for FFA chapters at both schools.

Superintendent Chris Bentzel spotlighted the school system’s progress in helping parents ensure their children are ready for kindergarten. He says the school system has to do a better job of preparing some of the county’s youngest learners for school.

Bentzel says both Inspire Early Learning Academy and Martin Luther King Jr. Early Learning Center are playing key roles in preparing children for school. Currently, 123 students are enrolled in Inspire and 144 students are enrolled in the Early Learning Center.

The Cub Cruiser, a mobile classroom, is officially in use and it serves to bring early childhood learning to families and caregivers, while providing information on available resources and support programs.

Turning toward public comments, Sandy Mullins, the mother of a Christian County High School student, says she has witnessed students having to wait outside of school in the morning before the building opens despite low temperatures.

Mullins urged the board to find a solution to the problem so that students don’t have to start the day cold.
