Officials talk growth, economic development at Chamber industry update

It was all about industry, economic growth and lowered taxes at the Christian County Chamber of Commerce Economic Update Eye-Opener Breakfast Thursday morning.

Officials discussed the announcements made by Kitchen Food Company, Cinis Fertilizer and of course, Buc-ee’s coming to Oak Grove, and Christian County Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam says announcements like that, along with the expansions of local industries shows great momentum locally.

Add to that what he calls a steadily decreasing property tax rate and he says that Christian County is experiencing real growth, and they want to keep that going.

State Representative Jason Petrie is chair of the House Appropriations and Revenue Committee in the state legislature, and he was also the keynote speaker of the event.

He highlighted the efforts happening at the state level to make Kentucky more competitive, not just for bringing in industries, but also for the individual. He gave a quick rundown of those efforts, which include the lowering of the state income tax and reigning in overspending in the state budget.

In a special recognition, the Chamber thanked Judge Gilliam and Oak Grove Mayor Jackie Oliver for their tireless work alongside the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Oak Grove Tourism to finalize what Buc-ee’s needed to locate to Oak Grove. Chamber President Taylor Hayes says that kind of teamwork is part of what makes Christian County a great place to live.

Officials also discussed the fact that a lot of infrastructure work is taking place across the county, from the widening of KY 115, the industrial connector and work happening at Exit 89 from Interstate 24 to make way for Buc-ee’s. The possibility that I-24 could be widened at some point in the future is also under consideration.
