Western Kentucky State Fair gets under today, continues Saturday with demolition derby, pageants

It’s officially the start of summer—which means it’s time for the Western Kentucky State Fair to get underway in Hopkinsville, with gates opening at 5 p.m. Friday.

There was a soft opening of the fair on Thursday with the “Quiet Midway”, which was a sensory-friendly time held for those who struggle with loud noises and bright lights. Fair Board Chair Kent Boyd says they had just over 150 people come through the gates to enjoy the experience, and it was a tremendous time had by all.

Now, the fair as we know it gets fully underway Friday, with a $25 armband night, the return of the petting zoo, live music in the air-conditioned convention center and a new show in the grandstands this year.

The fun will continue for the next nine days, with the pageants beginning bright and early in the convention center Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and lasting all day.

Boyd says Saturday is also when the always popular Demolition Derby will return to the grandstands starting at 7 p.m. and its looking like the weather will cooperate with the plans.

There will also be Pedal Pull Competitions underway in front of the convention center starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, and it’s a $30 armband night for rides, which open at 5 p.m.
