First Lady Britainy Beshear joined the Kentucky Pediatric Cancer Research Trust Fund Board on Wednesday to present $500,000 to the University of Kentucky’s Markey Cancer Foundation.
The funding will support the Care Advancing Treatment Succession (CATS) Financial Assistance Fund, which helps pediatric cancer patients and their families with housing, transportation, utilities and other essential needs.
Beshear says, in Kentucky, the state prioritizes the kids and the families, and reminds children battling cancer that they are not alone.
This latest investment follows another $500,000 that was announced in May, bringing this year’s total support for the CATS Fund to $1 million. The fund assists patients from birth to age 29 at Albert B. Chandler Hospital, helping families focus on treatment and recovery.
Cancer Research Fund President Elizabeth Turner says Kentucky remains a national leader with their commitment to supporting childhood cancer families. Markey Cancer Center Director Dr. B. Mark Evers says this funding helps families focus on what matters most to their child’s healing and recovery.
