Missionary Radio, formerly known as WNKJ, is kicking off its fall Care-A-Thon fundraiser on Tuesday to support the continuation of Christian ministry and music broadcasts in the region.
Missionary Radio is the broadcast ministry of the Pennyrile Christian Community, Inc. and its coverage region consists of Hopkinsville, Madisonville, Fort Campbell, Clarksville, Madisonville, Hardin, Providence and Murray.
Station General Manager Ken Cummins recently appeared on WHOP to talk about the fundraiser. The station hosts fundraisers in the spring and fall and Cummins says the station has been 100% listener funded for the past 45 years.
The Care-A-Thon runs from Tuesday to Thursday, and this year’s theme is “What an Awesome God” which was inspired by a song from singer Phil Wickham. During the fundraiser, Cummins says they will be on air on 89.3 FM sharing testimonials and praise as well as spotlighting the support it takes to ensure that they can keep the station running.
Cummins says it costs over $2,000 at minimum to run the station’s frequencies each day, and as a result of recent weather events, their insurance costs have increased. He says his biggest motivation for running the station is his love for Christian radio and that same love is what typically attracts donors.
