Fall chills are lingering in the air, and winter is approaching, so the Tennessee Valley Authority is sharing tips on how to stay warm while saving energy.
As temperatures drop and people switch from air conditioning to heating, an increase in power bills is common. TVA Energy Savings Expert Ashley England notes that HVAC systems often account for around 50% of a home’s energy consumption.
To stay warm while saving energy, England encourages folks to let natural sunlight warm their home, invest in thermal curtains to help keep the cold air out, set their ceiling fans to run clockwise and ensure heating vents are not blocked.
Some folks may resort to using space heaters or ovens to remain warm, but England says both of these methods of heating are inefficient and dangerous.
England also encourages folks to get their HVAC system checked out before the cold weather really hits. If the tune up is done by a service that is a member of the TVA’s quality contractor network, then folks can get a $50 rebate.
