Kentucky authorities respond to confirmed case of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza

Federal and state officials have recently confirmed a case of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza in a backyard poultry flock in Jessamine County.

According to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, State Veterinarian Dr. Steve Velasco III says the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed the virus after testing samples from the property. Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell says state and federal animal health officials are working together to contain the outbreak and protect Kentucky’s livestock and poultry industries.

The infection was first reported on December 6 after increased bird deaths were observed. The flock has been quarantined and depopulation began on December 11. A 10-kilometer surveillance zone has been established around the site, with movement restrictions and active monitoring in place to prevent further spread of the virus.

Officials say Avian Influenza poses no risk to the food supply when poultry and eggs are properly handled and cooked, though affected birds will not enter the food system. Poultry owners are urged to strengthen biosecurity, limit contact with wild birds and report sick or dead birds to USDA officials at 1-866-536-7593 and additional information on biosecurity for backyard flocks can be found at healthybirds.aphis.usda.gov.
