Hopkinsville woman claims $500k winning lottery ticket

A Hopkinsville woman is walking on air this morning, after winning $500,000 on a scratch-off lottery ticket while stopping for groceries recently.

According to a news release from the Kentucky Lottery, the winner has wisely chosen to remain anonymous, but she says she’s still reeling from the win. It happened when she decided to shop at the Kroger on Skyline Drive instead of her usual store.

She says she had a $20 ticket to cash and said she thought to herself she might as well grab a ticket while she was there. While scratching off that ticket, she realized the number 31 was matching, and then she uncovered the $500,000 top prize directly below.

The winner told lottery officials, “When I saw those three zeros, I froze. I couldn’t breathe. I was shaking, I couldn’t drive. I think I may have passed out.”

She and her husband visited the Kentucky Lottery headquarters to claim her prize, which amounted to $362,500 after taxes. She plans to continue working, but the winnings will provide “financial stability” for her family.

And luck seems to be on her side, as she has previously won a $225,000 cash ball top prize in 2017.
