The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating following a shooting in Crittenden County that resulted in the death of one man and a sheriff’s deputy shot.
According to a news release, the incident occurred Thursday afternoon at about 5 p.m. in Sturgis at a residence in the 2800 block of KY 365, when deputies from the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department were attempting to serve emergency guardianship paperwork. During the exchange, gunfire was reportedly exchanged with the suspect, identified as 60-year-old Ronnie Phillips.
Phillips was fatally wounded in the incident. Crittenden County Deputy Ricky Coyle was struck by gunfire and flown by helicopter to Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where he remains in critical condition.
A female victim was safely removed from the residence, and no other injuries were reported.
The investigation remains ongoing, and KSP assisted at the scene by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Union County Sheriff’s Office, Marion Police Department, Crittenden County EMS and Crittenden County Coroner’s Office.
