Christian County Clerk talks new vehicle service delays

After resuming their vehicle services on January 16, the Christian County Clerk’s Office along with clerk’s offices across the state are experiencing system crashes following the transfer to KAVIS.

It was announced in late 2023 that state vehicle services such as registrations, renewals and transfers would be put on pause during the beginning of 2024 as information from the system at the time was transferring to the Kentucky Automated Vehicle Information System (KAVIS).

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet the KAVIS system would enhance service efficiency. However, since the information migration to KAVIS, Christian County Clerk Melinda Humphries says they are open for vehicle services but statewide the system has been shutting down.

Humphries, says they are having issues with performing vehicle transfer transactions, but with the system shutting down all services are being affected. Humphries advises for those, coming to the Clerk’s Office for vehicle services to be patient and expect some delays.

Along with expecting a wait, Humphries says some services can be performed online. She says that those who need to renew their vehicle tags can do so online at drive.ky.gov. However online renewals are currently on pause because the website is under emergency maintenance.

Humphries has worked with the KAVIS system prior to the transition and says once it is operating at full capacity it should be easier and more efficient in comparison to the old system.
