The man found guilty in the 2014 death of his mother will soon reappear back in Christian Circuit Court, as the defense is looking to overturn his conviction.
There is a motion before the court to vacate the 2019 murder conviction of Jamal Mounts, who was found guilty by a jury in the death of his mother, Roxie Mounts. He was also found guilty in the attempted murder of Marvelyn Spray.
Mounts went to trial in June of 2019 and following two days of that trial, a jury found him guilty on those charges and on charges of fourth-degree assault and first-degree burglary. The court found that Mounts beat Roxie Mounts to death in 2014, assaulted his brother who attempted to interfere and then broke down the door of neighbor Spray’s apartment, and attempted to kill her.
That verdict came with a life sentence in prison with the possibility of parole, but he must serve at least 20 years before becoming eligible.
Mounts’ defense attorney and the Commonwealth appeared in the courtroom of Judge Andrew Self Monday morning, where they set an evidentiary hearing for November 13, where the judge will hear arguments on the motion.
Mounts is currently serving his sentence in the Kentucky State Reformatory in La Grange.
