Luann Diuguid the Coordinator of the Christian County Special Olympics spotlighted how the organization engages with those in the community living with special needs at Tuesday’s Hopkinsville Rotary Club meeting.
Diuguid was joined by members of the local Special Olympics and shared that they are competing in sports such as softball, basketball, bowling and track and field year-round.
Diuguid shared that this weekend the Special Olympics basketball team will be traveling to Louisville to compete in the state tournament, and soon they plan to start practicing for their upcoming track and field season.
The organization is open to those with special needs in Christian County. However, in the past Diuguid says they would allow athletes from surrounding counties to join as well, but now more surrounding counties have their own Special Olympics programs.
Diuguid says they are responsible for paying for new uniforms, transportation as well as hotel stays, but thanks to donations from community organizations they have been able to comfortably continue their program.
