House Bill 544 has made its way to the Senate floor in Kentucky, which looks to establish the State Aid Funding for Emergencies 4860 Fund to assist communities impacted by natural disasters.
The bill is sponsored by Representative Jason Petrie of Todd County, and would look to provide financial assistance to affected cities, counties, school districts and public utilities for critical recovery efforts, including infrastructure repairs, rebuilding essential government facilities and restoring public utilities.
The measure would also establish guidelines to ensure financial transparency by requiring regular reporting on how funds are strictly used for disaster recovery needs and not new construction in high-risk flood areas.
The bill would also authorize the transfer of remaining appropriations from previous disaster relief funds to support SAFE 4860, maximizing available resources without unnecessary new expenditures.
HB 544 is designated as emergency legislation, meaning it will take effect immediately to expedite relief efforts.
Representative Petrie says, “Our priority is to act swiftly and responsibly. By setting aside funds now, we are ensuring that Kentucky communities receive the support they need without jeopardizing the state’s financial stability.”
