‘Catastrophic failure’ at Eddyville Sewer Plant results in thousands of gallons of sewage leak

The City of Eddyville Sewer Treatment Plant had a catastrophic failure at their Sequential Batch Reactor Tank on Monday.

According to a news release posted by the City of Eddyville, the initial amount of partially-treated sewage released from the tank was around 400,000 gallons, and ultimately, approximately 800,000 gallons was leaked before it could be stopped.

Emergency response agencies, including the Kentucky Emergency Operations Center in Frankfort, responded to the scene.

All water treatment plants both downstream and upstream of Lake Barkley were notified, including the entities of the City of Kuttawa, the Lake Barkley Water, City of Princeton Water and Crittenden-Livingston Water District and the Kentucky State Penitentiary.

Agencies were taking all measures to treat all sewage coming into the sewer plant and officials are in discussion for a long-term solution. They say there is currently no cause for concern with the drinking water within Lyon County or surrounding counties at this time.
