CCPS readying for school year, Superintendent talks tax rates

The students of Christian County have only one week of summer freedom left—school is set to start for Christian County Public Schools on Monday.

Before that day though, CCPS will host several open house events for students and parents to have a chance to meet their teachers and other school staff and they’ll have ribbon cuttings on Tuesday and Thursday to celebrate the renovations and reopening of the newly minted Hopkinsville Middle School and Indian Hills Elementary Schools in their new campuses.

Bentzel says they’re about as ready for the new school year as they can be, and he urges patience as the bumps and wrinkles are ironed out, from the school day to transportation.

Recently, the school board voted to set the property tax rate for the fiscal year at 41 cents per $100 of assessed value, a decrease of 1.2 cents from the prior year. Due to property assessment bringing in additional revenue, Superintendent Bentzel says they were able to take the four percent increase revenue, while still decreasing the rate overall.

He says it does kind of end up being a wash though, because although the local funding increased, the SEEK funding through the state decreased in nearly the same amount.

Bentzel says work continues on schedule for the construction of new consolidated high school—they’ve been blessed with calm weather so far, making way for good progress.
