City Council approves the creation of three new EMS positions

Following the passage of House Bill 152, the Hopkinsville-Christian County Ambulance Board is set to receive more funding, so the Hopkinsville City Council voted to allow the board to create three new EMS captain positions.

HB 152 was passed during the 2025 session and comes into effect on January 1, 2026.

At the council’s Thursday meeting, Hopkinsville Fire Chief Steve Futrell says the bill provides additional funds for government-run ambulance services based on their run volume. Futrell says the ambulance board could receive an additional $550,000 to $800,000 a year, but he is unsure of when they will receive the extra funding.

Futrell says they could receive the funding later next year, so he asked the council to approve the creation of the new positions, and once the ambulance board receives the funding, then members will be promoted to those positions.

The council approved creating the positions and also amended the city’s budget to include the positions.
