To improve public safety, the City of Hopkinsville and the local police department are inviting citizens to form neighborhood watch groups.
At last week’s Hopkinsville City Council meeting, Mayor J.R. Knight unveiled a street sign that will be posted in neighborhoods where residents have formed neighborhood watch groups. Those interested in forming neighborhood watch groups and going through training can contact the police department at 270-890-1522.
The training reportedly focuses on what types of activity should be reported, how to report concerns and how neighbors can work together safely and responsibly. Once training is completed, the participating neighborhoods will receive a street sign that reads, “We’re watching and we will call the police!” and the crime stoppers phone number is also listed on the sign.
Police Chief Jason Newby says the neighborhood watch helps residents take an active role in protecting their community will giving officers valuable information that can help solve and prevent crime.
