Community unveils street sign honoring Raymond Gamble

A portion of Liberty Street along Gamble Funeral Home in Hopkinsville has been honorarily named “Raymond P. Gamble Way” to remember the funeral home’s founder on Thursday.

Raymond Gamble founded Gamble Funeral Home in 1987. During his life, Gamble was well involved in the community and received recognitions, including a Focus 21st Century Award, George S. Dooley Humanitarian Award, High-Capacity Minority Business Award and James Quarles Minority Business of the Year Award.

Gamble passed away in 2019. Before the sign was unveiled, family, friends and local government officials talked about Gamble and his impact on the community. His wife, Angela Gamble, read a poem sharing that his legacy has not been forgotten and that he will live on in the lives of those who hold memories of him.

Angela Gamble called her husband’s dedication to the community unparalleled and said he was always available to help those in need. Gamble’s son-in-law, Gerald Batey, can attest to his dedication and says the importance of caring for one another is a part of the legacy he left in the community.

The portion of Liberty Street by the funeral home was closed for the sign unveiling to give people space to gather. One of Gamble’s daughters, Angelique Colbert, says the large crowd in attendance shows that her father had a positive impact that reached many people.

Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. called the sign a symbol of Gamble’s hard work and kindness and hopes the street reminds people to live with honor, service and care for others.

Angela Gamble thanked attendees and those who made the sign a reality. She says wishes that Gamble could see the sign in person, but knows that he will in spirit.

The sign stands at the intersection of Liberty Street and East 14th Street.
