Former Hopkinsville Mayor, George Atkins passes away at age 82

Former Hopkinsville Mayor and state elected official, George L. Atkins Jr. died at the age of 82 on Sunday, April 14.

Atkins was a native of Hopkinsville and served as mayor of the city before he was elected to serve as State Auditor of Public Accounts from 1975 to 1980. He would later serve as a secretary and financial secretary for the Governor’s Office.

Along with his government work, Atkins was a past president of the Kentucky Alumni Association and also participated in many other charitable, professional and educational organizations.

Atkins’ memorial service will be in Louisville, but a visitation will be held in Hopkinsville at Hughart, Beard and Giles Funeral Home on Saturday, April 20 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, Atkins’ obituary requests that donations are made in his honor to the University of Kentucky Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.
