Former Magistrate Mark Wells passes away, leaving behind a legacy of community service

The citizens of Christian County, especially in District 2, are bidding farewell and good rest to former Christian Fiscal Court magistrate Mark Wells, who passed away on New Years’ Eve at the age of 72.

Wells moved to Hopkinsville in 1990 with a Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Kentucky in hand, and became a successful businessman local, where he created Super Lawn and Garden. Later in 1990, he began a new endeavor, Mr. Mulch, a mulch manufacturing business. During this time, he was also the owner and operator of American Concrete from 1993 to 1997.

After he retired, Wells felt called to public service and ran for office—he was elected as the Christian Fiscal Court Magistrate for District 2 in 2014. Even outside of that office, he was very active in the community, serving on the Trail of Tears Commission for many years, including as past President and making the Pow Wow a destination event.

His favorite volunteer efforts were cooking for the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen each Wednesday, May through October. He was a member of First Christian Church for over 35 years, and according to his obituary, loved jokes—the more off color the better—loved his family and never met a stranger.

Wells is survived by his wife of 33 years, along with his inherited daughters, six grandchildren and a great grand-daughter.
