Hopkinsville City Council selects Robert Meek to fill Ward 8 vacancy

After interviewing the Ward 8 council member applicants, Hopkinsville City Council Members selected Robert Meek to serve the unfinished term at Tuesday’s meeting.

Robert Meek, along with fellow applicants Kathy Detraz, Tiffany Pittman and Steven Mitchell, answered questions concerning their qualifications and why they want to serve on the council. The search for a new Ward 8 council member came after Seth Meek, Robert Meek’s son, resigned in March after he was sworn in at the start of 2025.

Robert Meek is no stranger to the city council; he represented Ward 8 from 2022-2024, but did not to run for reelection. During the interview, Meek shared that his son resigned from the position to start a job in Dallas, Texas, and says he wanted to finish what his son started.

When it came to highlighting his qualifications, Meek pointed to his past experiences serving on the council and in the military.

Following the interviews, the seven council members in attendance nearly unanimously selected Meek to fill the spot. Six votes were cast for Meek, while one was cast for Mitchell. Meek was then sworn in and took his seat among the council. He will serve on the council until 2027.

To conclude the meeting, the council approved the closure of seven unnamed alleys between West 2nd Street and West 7th Street on South Kentucky Avenue and Oneal Avenue. They also voted to remove the home address requirement for citizens who want to participate in the public comments period.
