Hopkinsville man charged with assault, robbery

A Hopkinsville man is facing charges of robbery and assault after he allegedly cut an employee with a knife at the Piggly Wiggly in Hopkinsville Wednesday night. 

According to the Hopkinsville police report, officers got a call about shoplifting at the business on North Main Street and investigation determined that 57-year-old Merle Watkins of Hopkinsville entered the store and allegedly tried to remove merchandise without paying.

When confront by employees, Watkins reportedly began struggling with them, using a knife to cut an employee on the arm, and then used a fire extinguisher to break the glass on the locked door and flee. 

Watkins was taken into custody, where he reportedly refused to identify himself. He would later be identified. 

Watkins is charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief and resisting arrest.
