A Hopkinsville man is facing numerous charges after he allegedly assaulted a woman and then fled from police last Thursday.
According to the report from Hopkinsville police, officers responded to the 1500 block of South Campbell Street, where a victim had contacted police to say that 28-year-old Devontra Burse of Hopkinsville had assaulted her and tried to force her into his vehicle. He was continuing to follow her while she drove herself to the police department on North Main Street.
Officers located Burse outside of the police department, where he allegedly abandoned his vehicle in front of the Hopkinsville Fire Department and fled on foot, ignoring commands to stop.
Upon reaching the river, Burse swam across before he was caught by officers, where he allegedly continued to struggle. Officers report that he was under the influence of alcohol.
The victim reportedly had visible injuries on her face and arms, along with signs of being bitten.
Burse is charged with first-degree fleeing or evading police, fourth-degree assault, resisting arrest, DUI, second-degree stalking and abandonment of a vehicle on a public road.
