“I Declare” Poetry Workshop coming to Pennyroyal Area Museum on Wednesday

If you’re a poet, or are interested in dipping your toes into writing poetry, then you might be interested in a workshop coming up hosted by the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County, WKMS and the Hoptown Chronicle.

This poetry workshop is inspired by the upcoming 250th birthday of the United States of America and the Declaration of Independence. To help celebrate, these three agencies are hosting a poetry workshop on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Pennyroyal Arts Council. The workshop will begin with participants introducing themselves by completing the statement, “I hold this truth to be self-evident…”

It will be led by award-winning writer and Murray State alum Constance Alexander, who is the Faculty Scholars/Arts and Humanities at MSU’s Teacher Quality Institute.

The workshop will feature at least two chances for free-writing, based on prompts influenced by the prose and intention of the Declaration of Independence, along with its relevance all these years later. The culminating activity will be a group exercise that asks participants to share their personal declarations, with the option of being recorded for a radio broadcast. A selection of these declarations will be aired regionally on WKMS.

Participants will be asked to express just one specific thought or idea, from silly to serious, earth-shattering to mundane, reflecting the range of cherished beliefs and attitudes.
